Biographical Information: Kevin Conlon earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Alabama and his Master of Fine Arts from The Ohio State University. He has been serving as the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since March 2004, during which time he has been an effective manager of the curriculum development process with organizational skills that utilize appropriate technologies to leverage information and communication. As a professor at SCAD, Mr. Conlon teaches design, drawing and sculpture, integrating technology into the classroom with supplemental online content. He has also worked as a writer and professional consultant in the fields of interaction design, architectural restoration, foundry work, and new media applications in foundation studies and he has written articles for Interactions Magazine (March/April 2008), and presented papers for the National Trust for Historic Preservation (1998), and the College Art Association (2002). In addition to his administrative and teaching experience, Mr. Conlon has been working as a professional artist for over 20 years. His distinctive sculptural works in bronze, cast resin, clay, and fiberglass, as well as oil paintings and works on paper have won many awards and honorariums. Lately Mr. Conlon has been very busy with portrait commission work in traditional cast bronze. His latest works include a portrait of Teh-he Li, commissioned by Angela Su, now installed at Aletheia University's (formerly Tamsui Oxford University) Matou campus in the Gallery for Taiwanese Literature and Literati, Taiwan; a portrait of Julie Backus-Smith called The Running Girl, a former Chatham County Commissioner for the First District, commissioned by Marie Backus-McGaughey, and now installed at Bonaventure Cemetery; a portrait of Noble Wimberley Jones called Founding Father; Jones was not only one of the original settlers of Savannah, but also the founder of the Georgia Medical Society as part of that institution's bicentennial, now installed in Savannah's Emmet Park; as well as a portrait of the Legend of Golf Sam Snead, commissioned by the Westin Group, now installed at the Club at Savannah Harbor. Conlon maintains a studio at his home where he can be reached for commission work. Artist’s Statement: "My work is diverse in both media and approach, including traditional materials such as cast bronze, welded steel and carved wood, as well as more contemporary materials such as cast and laminated polyester, acrylic, epoxy, cold-cast bronze, cultured marble, expanded polystyrene and cast concrete. The core of my work has always been the figure; while this is especially true with my portrait busts and figure studies, in some cases the figurative element is not always immediately obvious. Over the last ten years I have been using fragments of the figure as a metaphor for memory, generally working in a monumental scale, and often using architectural references and the landscape as an integral part of its design and metaphorical intent. Most recently I have been working to abstract the figure more by pushing the limits of both the metaphors I use and the temporal quality of the materials I choose.” |
