Thursday October 11, 7:30 pm, Trustees Theater Lecture Series Andrea Robbins and Max Becher The Transportation of Place "The primary focus of our work is, what we call, the transportation of place — situations in which one limited or isolated place strongly resembles another distant one. Everywhere, not only in the new world, such situations are accumulating and accepted as genuine locales. Traditional notions of place, in which culture and geographic location neatly coincide, are being challenged by legacies of slavery, colonialism, holocaust, immigration, tourism and mass-communication. Whether the subject is Germany in Africa, Germans dressing as Native Americans, American towns dressed as Germany, New York in Las Vegas, New York in Cuba, or Cuba in exile, our interest tends to be a place out of place with its various causes and consequences (Robbins/Becher 2003)." The lecture is free and open to the public, and held in conjunction with the artists' exhibition "(Dis)placed Identity," on display at Red Gallery through Oct. 15.

Friday, October 12, 5 pm, River Club Zig Jackson Zig's Talk Jackson, raised on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota, is of Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara descent. As a native artist in contemporary America, Jackson’s photography deconstructs myths and misconceptions about Native Americans while exploring contemporary issues. “The subject of legend and popular fantasy, [the native American] is commonly viewed as an ageless anachronism forever frozen in the past, as exemplified by tired and hackneyed characterizations such as the ‘Noble Savage,’ the stoic and ruthless warrior, the nubile, buckskin-clad maiden, the all-knowing shaman and spiritual guru, etc.,” Jackson said in his artist statement. “Even today, after centuries of coexistence, the real Indian remains an elusive paradox to the majority of non-native society.”
